The table shows the basic point: asking whether a product “has EN 352” is not enough. The right question is what kind of work it will be used for and what type of protection is needed. Helmet-mounted earmuffs are not the same as headband earmuffs. Disposable earplugs do not solve the same problem as level-dependent protectors.

Is CE or UKCA marking with EN 352 enough?

CE or UKCA marking and a reference to EN 352 are important, but they should not end the check. They show that the product has been placed on the market through a conformity route. They do not prove that it is suitable for every noisy job.

Start with the type of protector. Is it an earmuff, an earplug, a helmet-mounted model or a communication protector? Earmuffs are easy to supervise. You can see whether they are being worn, and they are useful where noise is intermittent or workers need to put protection on and take it off repeatedly. Earplugs are light and can be comfortable for long periods, but they only work well when fitted correctly. A foam plug inserted too shallowly will not provide the attenuation shown on the packaging. Training and fit checks matter more with earplugs than many people assume.

Helmet-mounted earmuffs can look like a simple accessory. Fit the adapter, click them onto the helmet and carry on. With hearing protection, that is not enough.

When earmuffs are mounted to head or face protection, the whole combination matters: the exact earmuff model, the helmet or carrier, the adapter, cup position, clamping force and seal around the ear. Change the helmet and the attenuation may change. Change the adapter and the fit may change again.

EN 352-3 should be understood as applying to earmuffs attached to specified head or face protection devices, not as permission to mix any earmuff with any helmet. This is especially important where helmets, eye protection, visors, respirators, hoods and hearing protection are worn together.

If the cushion does not seal properly, hair, spectacles, a hood or another PPE strap can reduce protection. The product may still carry an EN 352 marking. On the worker’s head, the real attenuation may be lower.

The first mistake is buying only by the EN 352 marking. The standard is important, but it does not replace checking the product type, attenuation data and the job it will be used for.

The second mistake is choosing the highest SNR without looking at the work. Very strong protection may look safer, but it can make communication and warning sounds harder to hear. Workers then lift one cup, remove one plug or stop wearing the protector properly.

The third mistake is issuing earplugs without instruction. Earplugs often fail in use not because the product is poor, but because they are badly fitted. A small fitting error can cut down the real protection significantly.
